How we rate side hustles and income ideas
EarnSouthAfrica publishes practical guides for South Africans comparing side hustles, online income, remote work, passive income, and platform payouts. This methodology explains how we turn messy real-world options into useful comparisons without pretending the numbers are guaranteed.
Startup cost
We include obvious and less obvious costs: tools, transport, platform fees, samples, data, subscriptions, stock, and setup documents.
Income potential
Ranges are directional planning estimates, not promises. We look at beginner and experienced scenarios, platform fees, likely volume, and South African payout realities.
Time to first income
This is the earliest realistic window for a first paid test or payout, not the time required to build a stable monthly income.
Difficulty
Difficulty reflects skill depth, sales effort, consistency required, regulation, operational complexity, and how hard it is to stand out.
How we research
We prioritise primary sources where possible: platform help centres, payout documentation, pricing pages, SARS guidance, FSCA material, and official programme rules. Third-party sources can help with context, but they do not replace platform or regulator documentation.
How to read an income range
An income range is a planning tool. It helps you compare whether a hustle is worth testing, how many sales or hours might be needed, and what costs could reduce take-home income. It is not a promise that a beginner will earn the midpoint or top of the range.
Why some pages are archived
Some older quick-reference pages are kept online for existing links but are marked as archive pages when they are lighter than our current quality bar. Stronger pages are prioritised in navigation and the sitemap. This keeps the site useful without pretending every older note is a complete guide.
When we update pages
- A platform changes fees, commissions, payout routes, or eligibility rules.
- South African tax, financial, or regulatory context materially changes.
- A reader reports a credible correction with evidence.
- A guide becomes too thin, outdated, or repetitive compared with stronger pages.
What we do not do
We do not sell guaranteed income, trading signals, investment advice, or paid access to jobs. We also do not recommend borrowing money to start a side hustle unless a qualified professional has helped you understand the risk.
