Uber Driver Requirements South Africa

Archived quick reference

This older page has been retired from the public guide index

This older page was shorter than the current EarnSouthAfrica quality bar. It is kept for old bookmarks, but we now point readers to stronger, maintained pages instead of serving a thin guide as if it were complete.

To drive for Uber in South Africa, you must meet specific requirements. This guide covers everything you need.

Driver's Licence

You need a valid South African driver's licence that's at least one year old. No learners or provisional licences.

PDP (Professional Driving Permit)

A PDP is required to carry passengers for reward. Apply at your local traffic department with your ID, licence, and proof of address. Processing can take 2–4 weeks.

Vehicle Requirements

For UberX: 4-door sedan, 2008 or newer (varies by city). The vehicle must pass a roadworthy inspection. UberGo has different specs—check the Uber website for your city.

Documents

You'll need: SA ID or passport, driver's licence, PDP, vehicle registration, and roadworthy certificate.

Background Check

Uber runs a criminal record check. Serious offences may disqualify you.
