South African KDP authors must handle US withholding tax and SARS reporting. Here's what you need to know.
US Withholding Tax
Amazon withholds 30% of royalties for non-US authors unless you submit Form W-8BEN. The US–South Africa tax treaty may reduce this to 0% for royalties—consult a tax professional.
Form W-8BEN
Complete this in KDP Account Settings. It certifies you're a foreign person and may claim treaty benefits. Update it if your details change.
SARS Reporting
Foreign income is taxable in South Africa. Declare your KDP earnings. Keep records in ZAR. Payoneer may report to SARS—retain all statements.
Practical Tips
Keep a spreadsheet of earnings and exchange rates. Consult a tax practitioner for your situation. Register for tax if you earn above the threshold.
